Whoever said safety has to be boring?
I usually run in the evenings. Starting out it might still be light, but around dusk and once the sun is down, things can get a bit dicey on the roads in terms of visibility. We do wear jackets and vests with reflective strips, but I've long hoped for something better.
Enter Noxgear. Nox means 'night' in latin. This company came about in an interesting way. Two aerospace engineers, Simon and Tom, were in a night-time ultimate Frisbee league, and they were frustrated with existing options for visibility. Necessity being the mother of invention - they teamed up and created a unique fiber optic vest. One of the creators is a runner, and he saw how useful this would be to other runners and cyclists. Recently we got the chance to try out their best-selling Tracer360 vest.
I've got nothing but great things to say about Noxgear's Tracer 360 vest. We've both worn it locally for training runs and it has always performed beautifully.
Check out DisneyGroom from side, back, and front views.
Drivers, cyclists, and other runners see you from a long ways away and can adjust their path accordingly. While this vest would be great just for your neighborhoods runs (and bike rides), I think where it really shines (literally) is at an organized race.

If you were at the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend last month, you might have seen me.
Blinking like a multi-colored firefly... or a pixie. Take your pick.
We sent a tweet and photo of me wearing the #Tracer360 vest the morning of the Royal Family 5K.
I ran two of the weekend's three events and spectated one race, wearing the vest all three race mornings. Since all the races at Princess Half Marathon weekend have early morning starts, everyone runs in the dark for the first part of every race. Several runners spotted me on the course and asked me about the vest. (My apologies for the blurry action pic.)
The vest itself has multiple light modes - solid colors, slow color changes, and fast blinking. You can check out a video of the vest in action here.

I really enjoyed playing with all of the various settings. RunDisney races are so much fun already, with entertainment, music, and characters, plus thousands of happy runners in costume. The Tracer 360 vest was the perfect glowing, blinking accessory for this type of race. I think it was especially appropriate for my Tinker Bell costume.

I found tremendous value in the Tracer 360 vest - not just to be visible to vehicular traffic, but during a large race like these among thousands of runners. Disney races are notoriously crowded. I've completed over a dozen runDisney events and this Princess weekend was the first time I was not shoved or jostled on the course. Other runners saw me coming, and they either politely ran around me or allowed me to pass.
Any else besides me thinks the Tracer360 vest would be THE PERFECT THING for the runDisney nighttime races like Tower of Terror Ten Miler, Expedition Everest Challenge, and the Wine and Dine Half Marathon. DisneyGroom wants to wear all black under the vest for a TRON: Legacy costume. I'm thinking it would be cool to be a one person "Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights" or grab a couple of your friends for a group costume - and be the "Main Street Electrical Parade". So many costume possibilities!
For the event I spectated, the vest also turned out to be a big winner. My friends and husband were running that morning and had no trouble spotting me among the cheering crowds. For summer concerts and evening festivals - just think, you could always find your significant other or child in the crowd. The Tracer360 will definitely become an integral part of my future race days - particularly with early morning starts and night races.
Some more awesome things about this vest:
- Super lightweight (6.5 oz with batteries) Once you have it on you forget it is there.
- All Seasons friendly. Rainproof. Yep you can bet I tried it in the rain. No issues. I checked the batteries later and they were still dry inside their casing.
- Adjustable to fit ANYONE. Unlike your typical running vests, these truly do fit everyone. They do come in sizes, but don't let that overly concern you. The belt has generous straps that adjust to fit the petite through the larger runner. To put it into perspective - we both wear XL in most clothing - but there was plenty of room to adjust the XL belt further.
- True 360° illumination and 3M reflectivity. Why is this important? Unlike a reflective armband or a little wrist strap, the fiber optic lights and the reflective belt means you will be seen from all angles: above, behind, underneath, etc.
- Battery Status Notification - When turning ON and OFF the vest will blink green, yellow or red to indicate the current battery level. No second guessing when to replace your batteries. No expensive special batteries either - just three standard AAA batteries. They will give you about 40 hours of use. That's a pretty long time before you need to replace them.
- All Tracer360s are sewn, assembled and ship from Ohio. Not a big multinational corporation. Not Made in China. Noxgear is a respected small business that gives back to their community. They have excellent and personal customer service. A company like this is precisely why we love small businesses over here at Running Happily Ever After.

I would love this vest most of my runs are in the dark
ReplyI run with a head lamp at my chest. I would love it for the Wine and Dine!
ReplyI have been looking for these - couldn't remember the name of the company!
ReplyMine too, Dave! And with tri season coming up, I'll need to most of my biking done in total dark.
ReplyI've run with a flashlight and rigged up a headlamp to my clothes too. Wouldn't this be perfect for night races?
ReplyGlad you found it, Sylvia. And thanks for checking out our blog. :)
ReplyI would love to have one of these, especially since I have to wait until my hubby comes home from work to run since I am a stay at home mother to three kids.
ReplyThese are awesome! Right now I just wear neon colors for the few times I un in the dark. I would really like to do later runs more often, but have not wanted to risk the poor visibility.
ReplyRight now, I wear reflective belts and wrist straps. In the summer I have to run after work, which is at 3:30 am. This would be great!!
ReplyAwesome! Never heard of these before.
ReplyAwesome! I like the idea of these - never heard of them before.
ReplyI have one of those yellow crossing guard type of vests but this would be a major upgrade. I'd wear it anytime I was exercising at dusk/night outside.
ReplyI have a headlight that I carry in my hand and flash at people. I'd love one of these, though!!
ReplyWas fun to see you guys at the Princess Expo (I asked if it was you while waiting in line for KT tape). I think this would be great for my W&D training. And...would be fun to wear to my Zumba glow parties!
ReplyI currently wear a headlamp and a flashing clip on light by Nathan. I would love this vest!

Miss Adventures in Running
I use a headlamp and a reflective Nathan vest! This vest looks awesome!
ReplyThis looks like a great way to stay visible when running at night!
ReplyI use a reflective vest that lights up front and back... I am not sure if I would wear for wine and dine... it is lit up enough but might be kinda cool....
ReplyThis is really a great piece of gear! I'd love to have one!
ReplyI have a headlamp, but I guess that's more to make the road visible to me, then to make me visible to drivers. I'd love to win this vest. To be honest, I wouldn't wear it during a race. I've done all 3 of the nighttime RunDisney races and never felt visibility was a problem.
ReplyI would love to win this! I usually just have some reflective gear on when I run. Like my shoes that have reflective tape and my brit bud earphones.
ReplyI am not a U.S. resident but I wanted to stop by and read your review. Love the vests! So cool!
ReplyYes I remember you. Thanks for saying Hi! And hello!!!! ZUMBA Glow Parties sound AMAZING! Oh - I'm going to have to look into these!
ReplyThanks for checking us out Crystal. The vests are pretty cool. I'm so sorry, I wish there was a way to make our giveaways international. Darn those pesky sweepstakes laws. :(
ReplyThis would be great to add to a costume for Wine and Dine it would also be great to have for those night runs training for Wine and Dine. Great product and post!
ReplyI currently use a nathan's running reflective vest to run, but this looks like it would give far more visibility. i dont tend to wear reflective gear at races though. there are enough of us out there that we should be visible.
ReplyI have a yellow reflective vest for night time running. I have not run any Disney races.
ReplyI do not yet have a reflective vest and I am going to get one. A single mom was killed by a car yesterday morning when she was out running in my community. It was still dark. I am getting serious about being safe after this tragedy.
ReplyNight beams, Road IDs blinkies, everything to keep safe! These look AWESOME!
ReplyI just use a head lamp on my brim of my hat and a small flashing light attached to my shorts.
ReplyThis is my comment
ReplyI currently use knuckle lights but NEED a vest for my Ragnar race coming up!
ReplyI don't use anything right now, other than knuckle lights occasionally, I just avoid running at night. I'm nor running any night time Disney races but I would wear one if I did! I am doing Goofy in January ;)
ReplyI have been eyeing Noxgear! They're stuff looks so cool! Right now I use an LED clip on for a hat. I'm not a Disney runner but would love this to stay safe in the early morning hours.
ReplyI wear a vest with reflective tape stripes and my dogs wear blinking LED collars. But this is SUPER visible, love it!
ReplyJenna, I saw that Noxgear is developing canine leashes, collars, and vests. Check out their Facebook page. The doggie gear looks awesome!
ReplyWould be great to use in the night for races and runs.
ReplyI'd love to wear it at the Wine and Dine Half!
Replythis would be so helpful for early morning running! I usually use a reflective vest and headlamp, but this is awesome!
ReplyI don't use anything currently *bad runner alert!* but when I run in the dark it's on a running path that cars can't get on, if that makes it better! I'm not sure if I'd use this in a Disney race. It would honestly probably depend on my costume.
ReplyThis vest would be awesome for the Electric Run!!
ReplyI haven't run at night before but I imagine these would be awesome for that. I don't run in the Disney runs but I recently did a Blacklight Run 5k that was at night that this vest would have been great for.
ReplyI just use the reflective lines on my clothes! Not quite enough--
ReplyThis is something I really need - I have a 100k coming up, and it's guaranteed at least a few of those miles will be at night!
ReplyI don't use anything so I don't run at night... I'd love to have something that would make me feel safer
ReplyThese are so awesome -- what a great idea!!!
ReplyLove this idea! I wear reflective cuffs currently.
ReplyI have a little flashing light that I clip to my shirt. Not awesome... This vest would be fabulous!!!
ReplyHeadlamp & reflective gear are what I'm using now but this looks amazing! Thanks for hosting!
ReplyI currently have a pair of reflective bands that I wear on my upper arms.
ReplyCurrently I do not run at night. I've been lucky enough to get in my runs before dark and it's so icy, I've been doing most runs on the treadmill. BUT I have a Ragnar coming up....so this will come in handy!!!
ReplyI haven't ever run Disney but for at home and night races I use a reflective vest that my dad gave me. it was too big so I had to make some modifications but it works well.
ReplyI try to wear light colored clothing but I'm guilty of not using extra visibility protection for my early morning runs. This would be super fun.
ReplyI don't run at night very much right now, but I might be willing to do it more if I had one of these. I'd definitely wear one for a nighttime race like the Disney ones.
ReplyI currently just wear a vest with reflectors on it, and some flashing armbands. This would be way better since I love to run at night!
ReplyGreat review. I actually bagged my run last night - unlike the rest of the country trapped in the polar vortex, southern CA is having a bit of a heat wave, and by the time it was cool enough to go run, it had gotten pretty dark, and I wasn't sure my ancient reflective vest was still reflective enough to keep me visible!
ReplyI'm a new runner, so I don't think I've ever run at night. This would be an amazing way to feel really safe doing so. RunDisney is one if my biggest goals! I would definitely wear one for a race!
ReplyThis would be awesome for night runs!
ReplyI have two upcoming night races. This looks great! I am still in training - starting with the C25k program.
ReplyCurrently I have a little light on my shoe and try to wear gear with reflective stripes
ReplyOnce this winter is over!!!!!! I plan to host night runs and early morning runs and this would be awesome to train for TOT with!!!!!
ReplyUnfortunately, I don't have any night running gear so I am stuck on a treadmill after the sun sets. I'd love to win this and start enjoying night runs!
ReplyI primarily use reflective gear for night/morning runs. I don't have any lights, but I try to pick a path that isn't on the streets so much.
ReplyI actually don't have any gear for running at night...terrible I know! I'd love to get this Nox vest..I'd feel so much safer!
ReplyI use Nathan strobe lights and arm bands to stay lit!
ReplyI run with a light that is meant for bicycles lol.
